Phuket, October 16, 2025 — Phuket Province, in collaboration with Kathu Municipality and local partner organizations, held a press conference to announce the upcoming “28th Kathu Marathon – Walk & Run 2025.” The event aims to promote sport tourism, boost the local economy, and highlight Kathu’s natural and cultural charm as part of the province’s vision to establish itself as a leading global sports destination.

Mr. Saranyasak Srikruenet, Governor of Phuket, emphasized that sports events such as marathons are key mechanisms for economic growth and community development. “Phuket is committed to becoming a world-class sports tourism hub. Marathon events not only generate income and distribute benefits across communities but also strengthen the province’s international reputation as a premier destination,” he said.

Mr. Wannayut Suttikul, Mayor of Kathu Municipality, noted that this year marks the 28th consecutive edition of the event. “We have prepared comprehensively — from the scenic route and management systems to community collaboration, which remains the heart of this long-standing event,” he stated.

Ms. Ratchadaporn O-in from the Phuket Office of Tourism and Sports added that marathons deliver substantial economic value. “Runners often travel in groups or with families, resulting in higher spending and overnight stays compared to regular tourists,” she explained.

Regarding safety and coordination, Mr. Akkarapol Suttirak Jitsupab, District Chief of Kathu, underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration among public, private, and volunteer sectors to ensure the safety of all participants. Meanwhile, Pol. Col. Prathueang Phonmana, Superintendent of Kathu Police Station, announced strict traffic and security measures throughout the race route.

Mr. Phongphan Thongphat, Head of the Andaman Narenthorn Emergency Center, confirmed that emergency medical systems are fully prepared, with teams of doctors, nurses, and ambulances stationed at key points along the course, along with an efficient patient transfer system to nearby hospitals if needed.

The press conference also featured inspiring runners, including Dr. Sorayut Thaennin (Dr. View) from Vachira Phuket Hospital and Mr. Krzysztof Hadas, an international athlete who expressed his admiration for the charm and hospitality of Kathu.

The 28th Kathu Marathon will feature five race categories:

  1. Fun Walk – 2.5 km
  2. Fun Run – 6 km
  3. Mini Marathon – 10.5 km
  4. Half Marathon – 21.097 km
  5. Full Marathon – 42.195 km

The main event will take place on December 14, 2025, with an expected turnout of over 3,000 participants from Thailand and abroad. The influx of visitors is anticipated to significantly boost the local economy, particularly in the hospitality, dining, and service sectors within Kathu and nearby areas.

This year’s marathon marks another milestone for Phuket in leveraging sports as a driver of economic vitality and community engagement, while reinforcing Kathu’s emerging identity as a “Sport Tourism City” — a destination enriched by its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and distinctive local lifestyle.
