Phuket – January 22, 2026 — Mrs. Oramon Sapthawitham, Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, officially announced the registration of “Phuket Seven-Color Lobster” as a Geographical Indication (GI) product. This milestone marks another source of pride for Phuket Province and represents a significant step in elevating local seafood products to national standards.

The GI registration certifies that Phuket Seven-Color Lobster possesses distinctive local characteristics in terms of its origin, quality, and reputation—qualities that cannot be replicated elsewhere. This recognition helps strengthen consumer confidence while adding value to the livelihoods and harvests of local fishermen in Phuket.

Beyond product protection, the GI status directly supports the local community economy, generating increased income for fishermen and local entrepreneurs. It also creates opportunities to further develop premium seafood menus across restaurants, hotels, and tourist destinations throughout the province.

From a tourism perspective, Phuket Seven-Color Lobster has strong potential to become a signature local delicacy and a form of culinary soft power under Gastronomy Tourism, attracting both Thai and international visitors eager to experience authentic seafood at its source. This development further enhances Phuket’s image as a world-class tourism destination with a strong and distinctive local identity.
