Phuket – On March 14, 2026, at Nai Yang Beach Resort and the Nai Yang Beach area in Thalang District, Phuket Province, Mr. Adul Chuthong, Vice Governor of Phuket, presided over the opening ceremony of the 14th “Dig the Sand, Touch the Waves” event. He was joined by Dr. Khemmawan Chuthong, Vice President of the Phuket Red Cross Chapter, along with representatives from both public and private sectors.

The private sector was led by Mr. Thanet Tantipiriyakij, President of the Phuket Tourist Association, and Kajonkiet Suksa School. Local residents and tourists also actively participated in marine conservation activities, including the release of sea turtles and bamboo sharks back into their natural habitat.

The event was organized by the Phuket Marine Turtle Conservation and Rehabilitation Group to promote marine resource conservation, raise environmental awareness, and provide opportunities for the public and tourists to take part in protecting rare marine species—especially sea turtles, which play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of the Andaman Sea.

During the event, a total of 170 green turtles and numerous bamboo sharks were released into the sea to enhance the survival chances of these rare species and support the restoration of the marine ecosystem. Participants could also support the initiative by sponsoring sea turtle releases at 4,000 baht per turtle, with all proceeds dedicated to the care, rehabilitation, and conservation of sea turtles in Phuket.

Now in its 14th consecutive year, the “Dig the Sand, Touch the Waves” event aims to build a strong collaborative network among local communities, businesses, and tourists in preserving marine resources. It also reinforces Phuket’s image as a sustainable eco-tourism destination that prioritizes the long-term abundance of the Andaman Sea.
