Phang-nga – Park officials from Khao Lampi – Hat Thai Mueang National Park, in collaboration with Phuket Marine National Park Research Center 2 , inspected the sea turtle nesting activity. The discovery of leatherback sea turtle nesting occurred within the park area on December 30, 2023, at 03:13 a.m. This marks the fourth nesting occurrence in Khao Lampi – Hat Thai Mueang National Park (fifth for the season).
Preliminary measurements revealed a chest width of 130 cm and a total flipper span of approximately 220 cm, making Big Mom the largest leatherback sea turtle observed in nesting activities during the 2023-2024 nesting season. It is likely the third nesting for this individual during the year. Subsequently, authorities carefully relocated and monitored the 85 cm deep, 25 cm wide egg chamber to prevent potential seawater inundation. A total of 139 eggs were discovered, with 102 being viable, complete eggs, and 37 being infertile. The turtle eggs measured 5.03 cm. The nesting coordinates were recorded as UTM 47P 413556 942788.
The park officials relocated the leatherback sea turtle eggs for incubation in a convenient location, ensuring optimal conditions for natural hatching. Officials will closely monitor and protect the nesting site from potential disturbances by animals or humans. The incubation period is expected to last for an additional 55-60 days, with anticipated hatching between February 22-27, 2024.
