Nakorn Sri Thammarat – The School of Management at Walailak University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hungkuang University in Taiwan, initiating a short course for students to learn from professional hotel experts and Michelin-star chefs.

The MOU, signed on May 16th, 2024, aims to facilitate student and faculty exchanges, joint research, and various academic collaborations. It was signed by Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, Acting President of Walailak University; Professor Dr. Laura Yueh-Guey Huang, President of Hungkuang University; Assistant Professor Dr. Pimlapas Pongsakornrungsilp, Acting Dean of the School of Management; and Dr. Yuh-Shuen Chen, Dean of the College of Human Science and Social Innovation.

The collaboration begins with 60 students from tourism and professional culinary arts programs from Walailak University participating in a short course with professional hotel experts and Michelin-star chefs at Hungkuang University.

Assistant Professor Dr. Pimlapas Pongsakornrungsilp stated that both institutions will engage in academic exchanges, the development of dual-degree program, short educational exchange projects, staff development projects, joint research, and international cooperative education opportunities. The primary reason for choosing Hungkuang University is its excellence in culinary arts and hotel management, as evidenced by its production of many Michelin-star chefs and professional hotel managers. Hungkuang University is also the first university to receive the National Sustainable Development Prize in the Education Sustainable Development Category and the Taiwan Foundation for Sustainable Energy’s Top 50 Corporate Sustainability Report – Nonprofit Gold Award.

Professor Dr. Laura Yueh-Guey Huang expressed her delight at the collaboration, noting that Walailak University is a prestigious institution with a strong reputation in health sciences, science and technology, and humanities and social sciences. She expects that the partnership will yield significant benefits, particularly in enhancing the quality of tourism and professional culinary arts graduates, providing students from both institutions with valuable language and cultural experiences, as well as culinary skills, and paving the way for future programs.
