The Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian ship hailed as “the most beautiful ship in the world,” will dock in Phuket, one of the stops on its world tour—the first in 20 years.
This Italian ship, “Amerigo Vespucci,” nicknamed “the most beautiful ship in the world,” was built in 1930 to train Italian naval cadets. It is currently on a global voyage to promote Italian art and culture, stopping at 15 ports for those interested in touring the ship.
The ship, resembling an Italian village, will not only showcase exhibitions about Italy’s long history, including Olympic torches from Italy’s early Olympic Games and a bronze sculpture, La David, by Italian architect Giacomo, inspired by Michelangelo’s world-renowned sculpture, but it will also feature an Italian restaurant and entertainment for those keen to learn about Italian history and culture.
Amerigo Vespucci is a full square-rigged sailing ship with 24 sails made of canvas, covering a total area of 2,600 square meters. The ship measures 101 meters in length, with three masts towering 54 meters above sea level. Its maximum draft is 7.30 meters, and it has a displacement of 4,100 tons. The ship is equipped with an auxiliary electric motor powered by two diesel generators, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 10 knots. The vessel also carries 11 smaller boats, four of which are equipped with sails and oars, used for cadet training. The crew consists of 270 personnel, including approximately 150 naval cadets.
On this voyage, the Amerigo Vespucci departed from Genoa, northern Italy, in July last year for its first world tour in 20 years, visiting more than 30 ports across five continents to train those aboard. The ship has completed about half of its scheduled stops and is expected to return to Italian waters in March or April 2025.
