Phuket – Ms. Disara Jangcharoen, Senior Marketing Manager of Jungceylon Shopping Center, Patong, Phuket, led a team of employees from Phuket Square Co., Ltd. to participate in a volunteer activity titled “Building Fences to Restore Seagrass Meadows.” The initiative aims to conserve the vital food source for dugongs. As part of the event, the company donated 30,000 THB to support the procurement of materials and equipment for the activity.
The donation was received by Mr. Saisanit Phongsuwan, Head of Operations at the Coordination Center for the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative (Phuket Rajabhat University), and officers from the Marine Resources Conservation Center of Phuket Province. The handover ceremony took place at Tha La Beach, Pa Khlok Subdistrict, Thalang District, Phuket.

Mr. Saisanit Phongsuwan explained that the dugong population is currently declining and becoming more widely dispersed, to the extent that it is now considered critically endangered. One of the key issues is the shortage of seagrass, the primary food source for dugongs. Building large protective fences around seagrass beds has proven highly effective. Surveys indicate that seagrass within these enclosures’ blooms, grows longer, and spreads laterally outside the fence, showing increased regeneration. This is a positive sign that the problem is being addressed effectively. Dugongs play a vital role in maintaining the balance of the marine ecosystem and are also indicators of the health and abundance of Thailand’s marine environments.

The “For Dugongs” campaign, which supports the protection and restoration of seagrass, has been an ongoing initiative by Jungceylon Shopping Center. Activities include stakeholder consultations on conservation measures, financial donations, providing essential items and facilities for marine officers—such as drinking water and restroom repairs—and mobilizing volunteer employees to actively participate in on-site seagrass restoration at Tha La Beach in Phuket.
In June 2025, Jungceylon will also host an exhibition titled “Art from Waste – For Dugongs” in celebration of World Environment Day and World Ocean Day. The exhibition will be held annually at the Bay Arena activity zone, Jungceylon Shopping Center, Patong, Phuket.
