Apart from being a beautiful tourist destination with stunning landscapes, white sandy beaches surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters, which is a dream destination for anyone wishing to visit, Phuket is also known as the city of two heroic women, “Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon” or known as “Lady Jan and Lady Mook”.
Both of them sacrificed and bravely led the people of Thalang and Phuket to defend against the invading forces that threatened the town over two hundred years ago. Nowadays, Phuket people still continue to respect and pay homage to them, having erected statues at Tha Rua intersection where anyone passing by must raise their hands in reverence or bow down to seek blessings.
The story of the two heroic women and the brave residents of Thalang City is filled with many interesting details and anecdotes. Today, we will take you to another intriguing place, and that is none other than “Lady Jan’s House”.
“Lady Jan’s House” is a single-story traditional Thai-style mansion, imitate from the old historic house of Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Sri Sunthorn. It features elevated wooden floors and is built on a land plot that used to be the residence (‘รน’ or ‘เรือน’ in Thai) of Lady Jan or Thao Thep Krasattri in the past.
According to historical evidence, this land was once owned by “Chom Rang Baan Kian”, the leader of Baan Kian village and the father of Lady Jan. Later on, someone donated the land to the Thep Krasattri Subdistrict Municipality. The current imitate house was then constructed to serve as a learning center about the local history and legends of Thalang City.
Within the house, there are sculptures of Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon crafted by skilled artisans from the Department of Fine Arts. The facial features of both figures are derived from the compilation of the facial features of their descendants, including beautiful and dignified portraits, as well as sculptures and statues.
Additionally, the house also features reconstructions of various utensils used in the past, including bedrooms and kitchens. There is also a lifelike and dignified seated sculpture of Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon, the place is well-maintained and cared for, showcasing the local heritage.
Lady Jan’s house is located behind the Thalang Telephone Organization, Moo 1, Thep Krasattri Subdistrict, Thalang District, Phuket Province. Visitors can explore without any admission fees.
