Phuket – February 20, 2024 from 08:30 to 12:00, the Royal Thai Navy, specifically the Third Naval Area Command, organized an activity titled ‘Repair and Placement of Mooring Buoys to Prevent Anchor Dropping in Natural Barrier Reefs’ at the forecourt of the Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center, Andaman Sea Section, Phuket, Wichit subdistrict, Mueang, Phuket. Admiral Adung Phan-eam – Royal Thai Navy Commander, presided over the event. Participants included the Deputy Director of Chulabhorn Research Institute’s Special Activities Division, Director-General of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, representatives from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation, Phuket Vice Governor, senior officers from Third Naval Area Command, commanding officers and staff officers from Third Naval Area Command and the Maritime Benefits Conservation Operations Center, Region 3. The participants also included representatives from government agencies, private sectors, the general public, and students from Phuket schools and colleges.
The objective of organizing the repair and placement of mooring buoys in this event, is to pay tribute to Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Walailak, Princess Chulabhorn, who has been instrumental in the conservation, restoration, and protection of marine resources in the Andaman Sea coastal area, particularly coral reefs, marine plants, and animals, and the natural environment, to maintain balance in nature.
This collaborative effort involves the coordination of resources, machinery, and voluntary cooperation of the local community, as well as youth in the area, to promote awareness of the value of marine resources, instill a conservation mindset regarding coral reefs in the area of Racha Yai Island to remain in a state of abundance, to create a tourist attraction and diving site, to enhance cooperation in preserving marine and coastal resources and the environment, demonstrating the unity of the campaign to collectively conserve the marine environment by instilling a sense of love and care for marine natural resources from childhood, avoiding the destruction of the beautiful natural environment, and to prevent the abandonment of anchors in the coral reef area in the Andaman Sea in the vicinity of Racha Yai Island, Mueang District, Phuket, as part of the action plan of the Chulabhorn Marine Park Project, Fiscal Year 2567 (BE).
Therefore, to promote awareness of the value of marine resources and encourage public participation in the appropriate management of resources in the area, as well as to conserve marine natural resources, the activities include an opening ceremony with the offering of tribute to Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Walailak, Professor Emeritus Dr. Princess Chulabhorn, who has made significant contributions to the conservation of marine resources, an exhibition, the release of sea turtles, beach clean-up, underwater debris collection, and the placement of mooring buoys in the area of Racha Yai Island, Mueang District, Phuket.
