Phuket – The Phuket Municipality, in collaboration with the government sector network, civil society, and private sector, is preparing to organize the Discover Phuket Pride 2024 @ Old Town event as part of the Pride Parade project for the fiscal year 2024 on June 29, 2024, aiming to make Phuket a livable city for everyone, stimulate tourism, and drive the economy in Phuket Town area.
Mr. Saroj Angkanapilas – Phuket City Mayor, revealed about the organizing of Discover Phuket Pride 2024 @ Old Town event that, as Phuket is an internationally renowned tourist destination, therefore, to build confidence in tourism and promoting openness in human rights in a world society full of diversity is crucial. Among these, the LGBTQ+ community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and others) stands out as a group advocating for human rights beyond just male or female genders.
In order to foster understanding of the existence of diverse gender identities in society and to promote social rights equality, it is considered as promoting human rights, which will lead to peaceful coexistence in society. The promotion of acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community has been ongoing throughout history, from various perspectives, and supporting the expression of the desire for equal rights in society that Phuket Province has organized every year is the Pride Parade event, which takes place in June. This month is known as ‘Pride Month’, the month of pride for the LGBTQ+ community, and the highlight of the event is the Pride Parade to support the freedom of LGBTQ+ rights and to commemorate the Stonewall riots in June 1969.
To promote diverse tourism and stimulate the economy in the municipal area throughout the year, the Phuket Municipality has collaborated with Andaman Chareon Company Limited, government agencies, and private sectors in Phuket to organize the ‘Discover Phuket Pride 2024 @ Old Town’ event under the Pride Parade project, as part of the annual budget for the fiscal year 2024. The event will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 5 pm to 7 pm., at Phuket Old Town area, specifically at Talad Yai Subdistrict, Mueang, Phuket. It aims to provide a creative space for the LGBTQ+ community to express their pride in identity and sexual rights.
Highlights of the ‘Discover Phuket Pride 2024 @ Old Town’ event will be the ‘Pride Parade’ featuring large rainbow flags in the heart of Phuket Old Town. It symbolizes equality and celebrates the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community, garnering interest from all sectors. Currently more than 300 people have expressed their desire to participate in the parade. Additionally, the event will include various activities organized by the public-private-social network, such as concerts by artists and campaigns to raise awareness about sexually transmitted diseases prevention.
