Phuket – On 17 May 2026, at Phuket Old Town in Phuket, the Peranakan Association of Thailand, in collaboration with the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization, Phuket City Municipality, the Phuket Tourist Association, and various partner networks, organized the “13th Phuket Baba Wedding Ceremony” to preserve and continue the rich traditions of the Baba–Peranakan wedding ceremony, a treasured cultural heritage that has been passed down for more than 100 years.

The event was honored by the presence of Vice Governor of Phuket, Adul Chuthong, accompanied by Khemmawan Chuthong, Vice President of the Phuket Red Cross Chapter, Dr. Kosol Tang-Uthai, President of the Peranakan Association of Thailand, Sophon Suwannarat, former Governor of Phuket, and his spouse, along with government officials, private sector representatives, members of the Phuket media, and local residents, all joining in vibrant celebration to help preserve the Peranakan culture, one of Phuket’s most distinctive cultural identities.

The atmosphere throughout the event was filled with the elegance of traditional customs. Both Thai and international couples were dressed in exquisitely colorful Baba attire, featuring intricately embroidered bridal gowns and groom costumes inspired by Chinese–Malay heritage, beautifully reflecting the unique cultural identity of the Baba–Peranakan community. The ceremony began with the gathering of participants at Sino House Phuket Hotel before the groom’s procession made its way to Hongyok House, also known as the historic Ang Mor Lao mansion, amid the sounds of firecrackers and joyful celebrations from relatives and guests.

Upon arriving at the bride’s residence, traditional welcoming ceremonies were performed, including the symbolic “Silver and Golden Gate” ritual and the formal reception of the bride. The celebration then continued with significant rituals such as prayers to the deities and the heavens, as well as the traditional tea ceremony known as “Phang Teh,” which symbolizes respect and gratitude toward elders. These sacred customs remain at the heart of the Baba–Peranakan wedding tradition, preserving both its spiritual significance and emotional value in their entirety.

Another highlight of the event was the couples’ wedding photography sessions at iconic landmarks throughout Phuket Old Town, including Sino-Portuguese architectural buildings, historic streets, and ancient mansions that reflect the timeless charm of Phuket — a city where Eastern and Western cultures blend harmoniously.

The 13th Phuket Baba Wedding Ceremony stands as another important cultural event that not only creates unforgettable memories for couples and participants, but also serves as a vital platform for preserving, passing on, and promoting the cultural heritage of the Baba–Peranakan community to both Thai and international visitors. The event also reflects the strong collaboration among all sectors, including Phuket’s media community, in sustaining and promoting the enduring charm of this unique cultural legacy for future generations.
